Place your fingertips on the keys that are colored yellow (see image).
This finger placement is the fundamental position for touch typing, from which it is possible to press all the other keys. Each finger is responsible for the keys diagonal to it - above and below. For example, the finger that rests on the letter 'E' is also responsible for the letters '>' and 'J'.
The two fingers that rest on the letters 'U' and 'H' are also responsible for the line of letters to their sides (in a diagonal shape) - for example, 'U' is responsible for 'P' and 'K' and also for 'Y', 'I', and 'X'.
The fundamental position can easily be found without looking at the keyboard, using the bumps that can be found on the 'U' and 'H' keys (try touching these letters and see for yourself...). Under the text box you can see which finger is indicated, and in the event that there will be mistakes - the image will explain what you need to press in order not to err.
For starters, until lesson number 14, we will learn to touch type by means of a meaningless sequence of letters; this is in order to practice correct use of the fundamental position as necessary for typing with all the letters and symbols. At a more advanced stage, we will move on to comprehensible texts. It is important to note that practicing with comprehensible texts is imperative for your success.
Comprehensible texts can be copied from any website or file. The text should be pasted into the text box (you can copy and paste text by selecting the desired text and right-clicking on the mouse). You may also practice lessons 15 which include comprehensible text.
After we have learnt to type texts by touch typing, it is useful to measure the typing speed. This function enables accurate measuring of the typing speed. It should be noted that the number of words per minute indicates your typing rate.
